As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
