New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
