The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
