British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
