Can You Crack It? The Forgotten Dutch Creation That Shaped our Contemporary World
One can find numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, that converted logs to boards with virtually no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster than any other nation, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy across the continent and the world.
