Amanda Nguyen, a women's health researcher, was aboard the automated spacecraft in Spring 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
